Dear Fortis Belize Stakeholders,

As we enter the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season on June 1st, we encourage everyone to take time to understand their risks and to fully prepare for this season.

Following the most recent prediction issued by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Weather Service forecasters, which calls for above-normal activity, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said if this prediction is correct, we will experience the tenth successive season with more storm development than what is typical.

Scientists continue highlighting that rising global temperatures are making forecasting more difficult, and we are simultaneously faced with more extreme weather events. Everyone in the Atlantic Basin is vulnerable to storms that can rapidly intensify and cause devastating destruction, setting countries back decades due to infrastructure damage and economic losses.

Given Belize's location in the western Caribbean, we know all too well that the risk of tropical systems forming nearby is elevated. Historical events like Hurricane Earl (2016), Hurricane Nana (2020), and Lisa (2022) remind us how quickly conditions can change, especially during the high-alert months of August through October. We must use this factual information, act early, and be prepared.

At Fortis Belize, we are ready. Our teams actively monitor weather conditions and conduct ongoing inspections of our hydroelectric facilities on a continual basis. We have robust protocols in place to manage dam operations safely, especially during periods of heavy rainfall when spilling may occur. We also have strong working relationships with NEMO, BEL, and local authorities to ensure efficiency and prompt, accurate communication of spill events if and when they occur. Our team is committed to keeping the electricity flowing as long as it is safe to do so for employees and customers.

We also urge you to take this time to review your hurricane plans. Early and thorough preparation is your best defense. Make sure that:

  • Your household emergency plans are up to date and that family members know what they have to do

  • Communication tools are in place and accessible

  • Supplies are secured well before any threat emerges

Preparedness is a shared responsibility, and today, we all have more opportunity than ever to stay informed and act swiftly. Make sure to keep informed via official channels, and remember we are best when we look out for each other.

Let's stay alert, stay safe, and support each other throughout this and every hurricane season.
